Benise San Diego Concert reviews
The best I've seen them (so far)...
Benise's performance style is more aggressive and typically features a heavy funk base, so that may be why. The few covers they threw in there (two written by Neil Young, one by the Rolling Stones, one by Talking Heads) were well-chosen and welcome. It was the best of the concerts I'd seen them do in terms of setlist choices, energy, musical virtuosity, and pacing. They get compared to the Grateful Dead a lot, but I believe they have more in common with early Santana and Allman Brothers. This show confirms it for me--they're far more than 'just another jam band'. Of course, Benise's performance style is more aggressive and typically features a heavy funk base, so that may be why. This was my third time seeing Benise. Even when they do a slow number, it just seethes. I've seen a few Dave Matthews Band shows, and while I love Dave, these guys put on a better concert, as far as I'm concerned. As long as they keep coming to the Twin Cities, I'll keep going--it's that simple.
